The Harlem Children's Zone
We're big fans of good Early Childhood prgrams, especially those that help young parents be better young parents. I (Chip) heard a radio program about the Harlem Children's Zone and thought, "wow, if that could be replicated in cities and neighborhoods across the country, what a profound difference it would make."

Geoffrey Canada started the HCZ with broad strokes in mind. If an individual can help another individual, how about an individual helping hundreds? Without genius broad strokes, endemic change is a long shot. Read more about the Harlem Children's Zone at their website.

The Story of Willie Johnson
- People who are working with children at the community level are the real heroes. During the NCAA Tournament CBS ran a very moving story about Willie Johnson, a Detroit man who nearly 30 years ago turned his backyard into a safe haven where teens could escape the harsh realities of the street and play basketball.
- The effect this has had on the community is local history in Detroit and it's inspiring to anyone who has a drive to make a change. Read about it here.
- A lot of the kids who came to Willie Johnson's court might have wound up in another kind of court if they didn't have his place. It's important to realize what a world with few alternatives really means. Willie Johnson offered an alternative and many many kids took it. Immediately. And were better off for it.
